Let's talk Indoor Lighting

When it comes to indoor lighting it can be a tricky subject.  Most of the time the lighting we use in our home is not very appealing.  It is often down lighting which casts shadows.  If we take indoor photos we often use our flash which causes harsh lines and shadows.  If you remember a few simple tricks you can get a beautiful photo every time.  First tip, open up those window treatments.  You can create a beautiful glow just by letting the outside light in.

This is an example of opening up the curtains and using the outside lighting.

If you are do not have access to natural lighting use an equal balance of light.  You do not have to have professional lighting.  With this image I took the shades off of two lamps and flooded the area with light.

{ex:  diffusing the flash)
If all else fails and you need to use a flash try to diffuse the direct light from the flash.  This means put something in front of the flash that stops it from flooding one area.  You can do this by taping a piece of wax paper on your flash.  There are many other ways to diffuse lighting as well, check online for different ways.
